A prominent piece of real estate in Downtown Fresno’s Cultural Arts District has officially changed hands. The property at 916 E. Divisadero St., famously known as the historic Graff Home, has been sold to new owners, marking the end of its three-decade run as the Wildrose Chapel and Funeral Home.

The transaction was brokered by the commercial real estate team at Stumpf and Company, including Ron, Alexandra, and Veronica Stumpf. They facilitated the sale of the 4,531-square-foot building and its accompanying 22,802-square-foot lot from the Johnson Family Trust to Sunnyside Funeral Care Inc.

The location has already reopened its doors under the new name, Rabara Memorial Chapel. The business is owned and operated by Michael J. Rabara, a Fresno local with nearly 30 years of experience as a licensed funeral professional. Offering traditional funerals, cremations, memorial celebrations, and specialized veteran services, Rabara shared that choosing this location was a deliberate choice to invest in the ongoing revitalization efforts of the Downtown Fresno area.

Development has been creeping into the wilds of British Columbia, Canada, just as it has everywhere else. Back in 2024, there were rule changes that would allow higher-density building for affordable housing.

Màrgaret Waterton, whose property backs up to a forest in East Courtenay, wants to avoid her 2.5-acre property from becoming four, eleven-unit dwellings when she’s gone. After failing to find a way to permanently prevent development, Waterton leaned on the Cremation, Interment, and Funeral Services Act.

By converting her land into a green burial ground, she ensures that, once the first person is buried there, it can never be otherwise developed.

Operationally, the model plans for long-term sustainability by establishing two dedicated trust funds: a $25,000 operational fund for ownership transfers and a perpetual care fund integrated into the burial fees.

A community open house is scheduled for June 11 to address zoning and neighborhood feedback.

Whether it’s a case of seeing forgiveness rather than permission or a simple paperwork mistake, Westmont Borough, Pennsylvania, has paused plans for the Frank Duca Funeral Home to add a crematory to its residential property.

While the owners want to consolidate their operations to this single location to meet rising cremation demands, the borough maintains that the addition requires a formal zoning variance and a public hearing.

The new construction was approved as a storage area, but officials issued a “stop work” order after discovering an unapproved roof opening meant for an incinerator flue. This is really unfortunate, because (as we all know) once word is out that you want a crematory, the pitchfork brigade starts piping up.

The project also hinges on state environmental permits. If denied, the owners plan to convert the roof opening into a skylight. Of course, the fact that they have an alternate plan also says something about what they think their odds are.

This is the kind of thing that will keep a funeral director up nights. A negligent crematory operator has done significant damage to Tidd Funeral Home’s reputation. The ‘how’ behind this is mindboggling. I’ll have more on the next podcast and in Sunday’s column.

A Franklin County, Ohio, family has filed a civil lawsuit against Tidd Funeral Home LLC, alleging the facility wrongfully cremated their mother against her express, deeply held religious beliefs and detailed, prepaid contractual arrangements. (Court Document Download).

The complaint, filed June 1 in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas, seeks damages in excess of $25,000 for negligence, breach of contract, and tortious interference with a dead body.

According to court documents, 83-year-old Nancy Anders passed away on May 28, 2025. Following the death of her husband of 63 years in 2023, Nancy had spent months meticulously planning and fully prepaying $9,533.00 for her own final arrangements. Because cremation directly contradicted her personal beliefs, her notarized funeral plan explicitly mandated a traditional casketed burial.

The plans detailed a highly specific logistics sequence: the funeral home was to secure a probate order to temporarily disinter her late husband, open his casket, and inter her alongside him at Union Cemetery.

Her instructions specified that she was not to be embalmed and that she be placed in the casket on her side with her head resting on her husband’s shoulder. The complaint notes that the logistics had been pre-approved by Union Cemetery management, and funeral directors at Tidd had previously praised Nancy for her thorough organization.

Because the disinterment process required a probate order, the family was assured by funeral director Joshua Tidd that the Hilliard facility would safely house their mother’s body for an extended period.

However, when the four surviving children arrived at the funeral home on June 7, 2025, to finalize the burial arrangements, they were met by the company’s owner and president, Rick Tidd. According to the lawsuit, Joshua Tidd informed the family that an “accident” had occurred and their mother had already been cremated.

The lawsuit alleges the physical cremation was carried out by crematory operator Eric Cooke without the legally required signed cremation authorization form from the next of kin. Ohio law strictly prohibits crematory operators from proceeding without verified identity documentation and explicit authorization from an authorized agent.

Plaintiffs Ben Anders, Elise Altman, Kirsten Kimley, and Jon Anders claim that the irreversible destruction of their mother’s remains has caused them severe, ongoing emotional distress and permanent trauma.

The lawsuit lists seven causes of action, including gross negligence, intentional infliction of serious emotional distress, and breach of contract. The family has demanded a trial by jury.

Tidd Funeral Home has not yet filed a formal legal response to the allegations in court.

Marks Funeral Home in Magnolia, Arkansas, will remain fully operational following the passing of its dedicated owner, Joe Todd. Todd, 86, died May 14 and rumors spread that the funeral home would close. The company issued a statement assuring the community it would still be open to serve families.

A Vietnam War veteran, Todd spent over five decades managing the funeral home, fulfilling a promise made to his father-in-law, Willie Marks.

Beyond his local service, Todd was a historic advocate for grieving families, notably standing as the only funeral director to testify before the Federal Trade Commission in 1976 to fight for fair industry practices.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Virginia, alongside his daughters and granddaughters. The family and staff emphasize that the institution will continue its 50-plus-year legacy of serving the community without interruption.

The Rhode Island House of Representatives has passed legislation that would expand the state’s death care sector by legalizing both natural organic reduction and alkaline hydrolysis.

Sponsored by Representative Michelle McGaw, the bill seeks to establish a clear regulatory framework for licensed facilities to offer these two alternative disposition methods. Under the provisions of the current draft, the new regulations would officially take effect on Jan. 30, 2028.

This marks the third consecutive year that the House has approved the measure. In previous legislative sessions, the bill successfully advanced through the House floor but ultimately stalled in the Senate. The proposal’s next hurdle lies with the Senate Judiciary Committee, which held a hearing on the matter earlier this month and voted to hold it for further study before deciding whether to send it to the full upper chamber for a final vote.

An Ann Arbor funeral director has made history by becoming the youngest president of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association. Kathlene “Kiki” Rodgers, who works at Nie Family Funeral Homes, is also only the fifth woman to lead the organization since its founding in 1880.

Rodgers has been serving families in Washtenaw County for nearly a decade. Her leadership within the MFDA includes a five-year tenure as a district director, as well as serving as the board’s secretary and treasurer. She also co-chaired an initiative dedicated to supporting and developing newly licensed and young professionals in the industry.

The MFDA represents roughly 1,100 funeral directors and 465 funeral homes across the state. In addition to her full-time work, Rodgers has been a part-time instructor at Wayne State University’s mortuary science program, where she earned her degree.

MFDA leadership noted that her background as an educator and advocate will be critical as the nation’s oldest funeral professionals organization works to support members and elevate the profession.

A former VFW post in Reddick, Florida, may soon be repurposed into a wholesale pet aquamation facility, pending final approval from Marion County officials, according to Ocala-News.com.

Applicants Paula Dempsey and Ted Stone have submitted a request for a Special Use Permit to bring alkaline hydrolysis operations to the 1.55-acre property at 19241 N US Highway 441. The site, owned by Solfan, LLC, previously served as the Orange Lake VFW Post 10733 and currently holds a Community Business zoning classification.

According to application materials, the facility will utilize a PET-550 system, which features a 550-pound capacity capable of handling approximately 14 partitioned animals per 24-hour cycle. The business will accommodate standard domestic pets as well as small livestock.

Operating strictly under a B2B wholesale model, the facility will not feature public hours or on-site memorial services, instead working directly with local veterinary offices.

Because the property is located within both the Environmentally Sensitive Overlay Zone and the Secondary Springs Protection Zone, county staff recommended approval of the permit under strict environmental conditions.

Under the proposed mandates, the operators are prohibited from discharging effluent into the site’s existing septic system. Instead, all wastewater must be captured, stored in tanks, and hauled off-site. Additionally, all processing and storage must take place entirely indoors.

Following a review by the Marion County Planning and Zoning Commission, the proposal is slated to move to the Marion County Board of County Commissioners for a final ruling on June 17.

On Sunday, May 17, an EF-3 tornado tracking through Howard County, Nebraska, left a path of destruction just north of St. Libory, completely destroying four homes. A funeral director from St. Paul who resides in the rural area near the impact site shared a harrowing perspective on the event with her local paper.

Tracey Dietz, who owns Jacobsen-Greenway-Dietz Funeral Home in St. Paul and Greenway-Dietz Funeral Home in Palmer, had just gotten home with her family when the storm started. Her husband, Dirk, works for the power company and was called away not long after the lights went out.

Dirk called home not long after leaving to say he could see the storm and it was dangerously close.

While she weathered the storm with her daughter, Scotti, Dietz had a particularly funeral director kind of experience. Beyond the immediate threat to their own safety, she started to think of her neighbors. If any of their nearby neighbors did not survive the twister, Dietz would have to respond.

Funeral directors often have to experience traumatic events twice as they unfold. Once in the enduring and again in the aftermath.

Fortunately, despite the severe structural damage and homes being reduced to splinters by wind speeds reaching up to 160 mph, all residents in the path of the storm managed to escape or be rescued without major injuries, sparing the community and the local funeral director from that feared outcome.

Illinois lawmakers unanimously passed House Bill 4695, strengthening state oversight of cremation facilities. Sponsored by Senator Patrick Joyce, the legislation expands the state comptroller’s investigative authority and mandates that bodies be cremated within 60 days, unless special circumstances apply. It also requires cremated remains to be responsibly maintained and protected from the elements.

The bill follows the March 2025 closure of Heights Crematory in Chicago Heights, where investigators discovered more than 100 improperly stored bodies stacked in trailers, exposed body parts, and poor record-keeping. The remains of over 500 people were subsequently transferred to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Investigations into the Heights Crematory scandal revealed severe flaws in Illinois’ regulatory framework, prompting lawmakers to overhaul the state’s oversight process.

Under previous rules, state regulators lacked the authority to conduct unannounced inspections, which allowed operators to hide violations. Heights Crematory was able to hide an entire trailer filled with bodies during a scheduled state audit. The state’s investigative scope was also restricted by narrow statutory language, leaving inspectors unable to examine facility records and day-to-day operations thoroughly.

Furthermore, regulators lacked emergency powers to halt immediate threats. Shutting down a non-compliant facility required a lengthy administrative hearing process, during which crematories could continue accepting bodies.

The legislation now heads to Governor JB Pritzker’s desk for an expected signature.

Two years after Maryland lawmakers passed the Green Death Care Options Act, Earth Funeral has officially opened what it claims is one of the world’s largest human composting facilities. It hopes to serve 2,000 families per year from its 36,000 sq. ft. facility, which has 56 vessels and room for double that.

The launch establishes a significant East Coast footprint for natural organic reduction. For Mid-Atlantic funeral directors, the facility represents a major operational shift. Previously, serving terramation families on the East Coast required cross-country transportation arrangements.

According to Axios, the company provides funeral directors access to a “family portal” designed to handle arrangements, documentation, and local permit processing.

Funeral directors coordinating with Earth Funeral can offer families the choice of receiving a specific portion of the soil (provided in specialty, travel-friendly memorial containers) or opting to have the remaining volume donated directly to local land restoration and forestry conservation sites.

A new bill introduced in the Minnesota Senate aims to mandate that public cemeteries accommodate religious burial customs, including eco-friendly green burials.

Senate File 5305, authored by Sen. Omar Fateh, would require all municipal, town, and public cemeteries to permit individuals to be buried in accordance with the rites of their recognized religion. Under the proposed legislation, this explicitly includes allowing green burials, provided they comply with existing state health regulations.

Additionally, the bill would amend current state statutes regarding burial density. While standard green burial plots are generally restricted to a maximum of 300 burials per acre over a 100-year period, SF 5305 would require cemeteries to permit a higher density if a green burial is a required element of an individual’s religious rites.

The bill was officially introduced on May 16 and has been referred to the Senate Commerce and Consumer Protection Committee for further review.

State regulators have revoked the license of the historic Japanese Cemetery in Colma, California, following years of leadership disruption and regulatory delinquency exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau stripped the Japanese Benevolent Society of California of its certificate of authority effective May 7.

According to Nichi Bei News, the organization’s compliance issues began in 2019 when its long-term president fell ill and later passed away. Operational disruption peaked during the pandemic, when the society’s board, which was composed largely of elderly, Japanese-speaking members, struggled to hold regular remote meetings.

The state cited various compliance infractions, including the failure to employ a licensed cemetery manager. Despite recent efforts by a newly reconstituted board to rapidly file back taxes and resolve outstanding fines, the state declined to halt the revocation.

Under the state order, the historic cemetery’s endowment fund is frozen, and it is legally barred from selling new plots or conducting new interments. However, pro bono legal counsel Donald Tamaki clarified that the grounds will remain open for maintenance, and the organization plans to seek reinstatement after a mandatory one-year waiting period.

Declining church attendance has been a perennial entry on the list of reasons casketed burial has been declining. Neil deGrasse Tyson recently proposed a non-religious, but memorially significant, reason for choosing burial over cremation.

Speaking on a recent episode of his StarTalk podcast, Neil deGrasse Tyson addressed how a scientifically minded person might view death and mortality. While Tyson argues that human consciousness simply ends when brain activity ceases, he offered an ecological defense of standard earth burial over cremation.

“If I’m buried and I decompose, all that energy gets absorbed by microbes, by flora and fauna dining upon my body the way I have dined upon flora and fauna my whole life,” Tyson said. He described the process as “giving back to the earth what I had taken or literally borrowed over my life.”

Tyson noted that cremation also obeys the laws of physics, though the destination of the energy changes. Rather than recycling back into the local ecosystem, the biological energy of a cremated body is converted into heat, eventually radiating into deep space as infrared energy traveling at the speed of light.

However, for his own final disposition, Tyson prefers his energy remain on Earth to feed new life.

The perspective offers deathcare professionals a unique narrative framework for secular or eco-conscious families who are looking for a meaningful, non-religious interpretation of body burial. Rather than viewing burial simply as a tradition, Tyson frames it as a final act of biological reciprocity.

Tyson closed the segment by reading a passage from his book, Starry Messenger, emphasizing that death should be viewed as the natural conclusion to a rare biological privilege. Given the vast mathematical permutations of human DNA, the fact that any individual gets to exist at all is a statistical marvel.

“Yes, life is better than death, but life is also better than having never been born,” Tyson said. “We get to live and ultimately die in this glorious universe.”

I’ll admit to a deep and abiding bigotry against politicians. I think their only belief is advancing their personal interests while sucking at the government teat is better than working for a living.

Ideology aside, I believe they are, to a person, amoral cowards. As it turns out, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt is also not quite as smart as a 5th grader.

Here’s a brief rundown to bring you up to speed:

Stitt has vetoed House Bill 3660, a measure that would have made Oklahoma the 15th state to legalize natural organic reduction. The bill passed both legislative chambers with roughly 60% of the vote.

Lawmakers included provisions making it a felony to sell the resulting remains or use them to cultivate food for humans or livestock in response to genuine (if misguided) concerns from the public.

Opponents fiercely attacked the measure, mostly relying on lies about the process and the American Catholic position that calls the process an affront to human dignity. Essentially, all the tedious arguments that were once used against cremation.

I’m used to that.

What caught me by surprise was the argument that won, which is, “This is the kind of thing that Democrats do.”

This insulting line of argument was proffered by Republican State Representative Jim Shaw, who has been described as a liar chasing social media clicks by Republican colleague, State Senator Casey Murdock. Shaw has not disputed the claim.

I bring this up because Shaw, a la Wile E. Coyote, envisions a world with Republican and Democratic funeral homes, with political preference being the deciding factor.

I don’t think it’s outrageous to say that funeral home owners tend to skew conservative. I also don’t think it’s outrageous to say that, with the exception of the occasional nutball, funeral directors don’t want to talk politics in the arrangement room.

As a child of a mixed marriage (Republican mother and Democrat father), identity politics never made any sense to me. I genuinely feel bad for people who allow themselves to get caught up in it, turning over the thinky-parts of their head to slime who mine it for profit.

As pathetic as Shaw is, how much sadder is Gov. Stitt for being afraid of getting liberal cooties from a Republican pro-business bill?

I know a ton of you are politically connected. While using deathcare to stoke the culture war might suit the political class, this is really the last thing independent funeral homes need.

If you’re unfortunate enough to have a would-be firebrand representing you, maybe ask them to keep funeral service out of their mouths for the next six months.

What began as a localized investigation into a single funeral director has evolved into a sweeping financial scandal, leaving grieving families in the lurch and prompting the state to offer unprecedented financial assistance to those whose “final arrangements” vanished into thin air.

The case centers on Philip Pietras, 51, of Coventry, Connecticut, the prominent face of Pietras Family Funeral Homes. Once a trusted figure serving the communities of East Windsor, Vernon, Coventry, and Tolland, Pietras now finds his professional life in ruins and his freedom in jeopardy following allegations that he systematically looted escrow accounts intended for pre-paid burials.

A Pattern of Deceit

The investigation first came to light in October 2024, culminating in Pietras’s arrest on April 6, 2025. According to state police, Pietras surrendered at Troop K and was charged with first-degree larceny. He was initially released on a $50,000 bond, but the scale of the alleged theft has grown significantly since his first court appearance.

Initial reports identified eight victims who had lost between $4,500 and $15,700 each. However, a redacted affidavit and subsequent State Criminal Investigation summaries now point to a wider web of victims spanning Eastern Connecticut, including residents from Ellington, Manchester, Danielson, Amston, Columbia, Tolland, and Bolton. The victims range in age from 43 to 83.

License Stripped

On May 9, 2025, the Connecticut Department of Public Health moved to suspend Pietras’s embalmer’s license. During the hearing, DPH staff attorney Julienne Cutaia detailed a statement of charges involving multiple counts of fraud and larceny.

While Pietras’s website formerly boasted of compassionate service across four locations, investigators with the Somers Resident Trooper’s Office paint a different picture: one of funds “intended to be secured in escrow” that were instead diverted for personal use.

State Steps In to Bridge the Gap

In a recent and rare move, the State of Connecticut has announced a program to offer financial assistance to those affected by the Pietras scam. The initiative aims to help families who paid for services, now estimated to involve over $1.3 million stolen from more than 128 clients.

With Philip Pietras reportedly holding only about $14,000 in personal assets, the state recognized that victims had little hope of recovering their life savings through civil lawsuits alone. In response, a $1 million Funeral Service Compensation Account was established as part of the state’s 2026-2027 budget.

Key details of the relief program include:

• Individual Payouts: Eligible victims or their heirs can apply for up to $10,000 to recoup funds lost to the scam.

• Administration: The fund will be managed by the Department of Consumer Protection and the State Treasurer.

• Application Status: While the fund was officially signed into law, the formal application window is set to open following the start of the fiscal year on July 1, 2026.

• Requirements: The DCP is expected to finalize application guidelines by January 1, 2027. Applicants will need to provide their original funeral service contracts and proof of payment.

State Representative Tammy Nuccio, who spearheaded the legislation, noted that the state is also forming a specialized “Funeral Service Working Group” to overhaul industry regulations and ensure that pre-paid burial funds are never again vulnerable to personal misuse.

Authorities continue to urge anyone holding a contract with Pietras Family Funeral Homes to keep all original documentation in preparation for the upcoming claim process.

Under the leadership of Lanae Strovers, a funeral director and trainer with the National Funeral Directors Association, the nonprofit organization The Final Salute has established a personalized approach for handling unclaimed remains.

From Storage Shelves to Final Honors

The initiative was born out of a moment of professional reckoning. While on medical leave, Strovers took on the task of auditing roughly 300 urns sitting in her firm’s basement.

“I had been with this funeral home at this point for probably more than five years, and I didn’t know that they were there,” Strovers said.

After months of contacting families, she found a segment of the population that simply had no one left to call.

“That’s where I realized, I just don’t feel right about not doing anything, just letting them be down there, and that’s where I had that 2 a.m. thought of, ‘Hey, we should have a service for these people.’”

What started with a small, private burial for nine children has grown into a major annual event.

A Century of Stories

Last year, The Final Salute received nonprofit status. This year, it held its biggest event to date, expanding to provide permenant disposition to 150 people at a separate service. People who heard about the program reached out and shipped remains to Iowa.

Since the number of remains was so much more than The Final Salute usually inurns at once, Strovers was caught a little short, so she reached out to Starmark.

“We needed 150 urns, and we reached out to see if they would be willing to give us a discount and they blew us away with donating all 150!!!” she wrote in an email.

While military veterans often receive high-profile honors, this particular service focuses on the “everyday” citizens, the teachers, farmers, nurses, and doctors who, for various reasons, had no one to claim them at the end of their lives.

The remains honored April 25 represent a vast timeline of Iowa and American history. Some individuals passed away recently, while others, like Abbie Searle, died as far back as 1919. The reasons they went unclaimed are as varied as the people themselves.

I don’t know how much business Alibaba gets from North American funeral directors, but the company clearly thinks there’s more money to be made by Southeast Asian providers. More to the point, this article from Alibaba encourages producers to get into deathcare, especially if they can source artisan or eco-friendly (or eco-friendlier) offerings.

While the company’s global supply for traditional monuments and headstones has contracted by nearly 30%, family demand for memorialization products is climbing. This gap is precisely why the platform is aggressively recruiting specialized producers from Southeast Asia. They don’t want to just add more “stuff” to the catalog, but to take advantage of what they see in site search.
